Congratulations to team “3 pints of lager and 3 packets of crisps” who were victorious at the quiz night.

It would appear that a great night was had by all, so thanks to everybody that came, all 83 of you.

Thanks also to everybody for organising and helping out on the night.

We managed to raise another chunk of money towards restoration of the hall.

2010 Elections come to Farley Hill as seen by our correspondent Richard Lilley

With the threat of local elections looming and the subsequent Parliamentary elections on the same day, I was honoured to be given the job as Presiding Officer at Farley Hill School this year.

Together with my youngest son, Max, a past pupil of the school we prepared ourselves for what was going to be a larger than usual turnout this year.

It is thanks to the media circus that has made so many people become aware and get a sense of wanting to make a difference this year I am sure the reason for such a turnout. Only thing missing was Simon Cowell!

An early start beckoned with the doors opening at 7am and in popped our first customer very shortly afterwards. This was followed soon by another and yet another! Old friends and lots of new faces came through to put their own mark onto the ballot papers. Where time permitted, various comments and discussions followed. Possible development in the area, schools, ponds even the old favourite - septic tanks! Ahh village life…

One comment from a chum was his remark on my expanding waistline!!! I said “Christmas and Easter chocolates”, Though I may have worn those excuses out by now. Then at one point my wife called in to vote and forced me to eat a chocolate éclair! I thought it would be rude not to!

Max and I really enjoyed the banter especially from our senior citizens who we see seldom in the village.

Doors closed 10pm on the dot after a flurry of evening voters it made the last hours wiz by.
Sealed ballot boxes were delivered to a posse of enthusiastic people who relieved us of the days business only to be whisked away for the count that followed through the early hours of Friday morning.

For Max and myself a good nights sleep beckoned but for others they would roll in home about 5am. As the smallest Polling Station in our area I feel we had an easy day but for other colleagues who had much larger numbers of voters, well, they do have my admiration for what was nationally, a very busy time. For what was a most pleasant day, we would like to express our thanks to all the village folk, the School and the brilliant Hilda for her help too.

Oh, a couple of visits by three peacocks through the day who left their own marks on the playground was never getting my vote!

Cleaning up after another eggcellent event

The 2010 Easter Egg Hunt was a great success this afternoon.

A big thanks to all those who came along to enjoy the egg hunt, face painting, colouring and cake eating. The cake eating wasn’t a contest, although if it was, there were some clear winners Harry A and Thomasin spring to mind.

Well done to Zoe and Abigail who were the winners of the colouring competition. it was really tricky to judge as all the entries were fab.

More than 50 children helped us to raise £90 towards the repair and renovation of Victory Hall.

Well done everyone.

Drink to Victory - A success

Last nights inaugral cheese and wine evening was a great success.
40 village folk sampled a great array of cheese and a greater array of fine wines until late o’clock.

Highlights of the evening included a quiz to test our gourmand knowledge. The folk who proved to be expert in all things vin et fromage were Reg and Sarah who walked away with an adoption certificate proving they now own a vine!

What really made the evening though was the great company.

We didn’t set out to raise funds during this event but happened to raise more than £100.

looking forward to many more.

Onwards to Victory !

Committee meet the trustees

Representatives of the committee last night met with the trustees of the Victory Hall charity (Lord Bearsted & Lady Hill-Wood) to present our vision for the future of the hall.

All present felt it was a very, very positive meeting.

There’s now plenty to do to make things happen but the green light has been given.

Onward to Victory!

Amphibious Invasion !!

Thanks to Cathy Jones for this…

You might not know it, but Farley Hill boasts one of the county’s most successfull toad crossings located on Priest Hill.

Last year a team of villagers helped over 1000 toads (but sadly couldn’t stop more than 100 from being squished, which is not too good for Mr Toad.

Its a good road to avoid driving down at night from mid feb to mid/late march.

The scale of the toadmanitarian challenge was so great that last year the Berkshire Amphibian and Reptile Group took over the site after local residents felt they needed more help.

For more info about the challenges faced by toads please visit this site http://www.arguk.org

A great start to Christmas

Nearly 40 villagers, young and old turned out to start the festive season with a resounding roar.

The residents of Woodbury Court were well pleased with the selection of carols and Christmas songs sung for them.

Guitar and percussive accompaniment impressed also.

A ration of one or two songs per house meant that we were all back at the Victory Hall in plenty of time to enjoy a cup of good cheer and some figgy pudding (okay mince pies).

Thanks to the committee for organising a very special evening for all. Hopefully this was the first of many evenings we can spend in each others company.
